Back in the 1700s Taormina was already one of the favourite destinations of those, taking the Grand Tour, who included it among the highly exclusive group of Mediterranean sunspots. Its position perched over the sea like a wide terrace nestling over the clear waters of the Ionian Sea and on the northern side of Mount Etna: the european highest active volcano which, in winter, often capped with snow, offering to the visitors a breathtaking and memorable view.
The tourist has a lot to do and see: the Greek theatre, several painting exhibitions held in local buidings and churces, fine elegant shopping along the famous "Corso Umberto", with its classical music cafès and pastry shops. Moreover, as you will see in taormina maps and guides, you will have the possibility of visiting local art museums, taking naturalistic walks in the countryside, golfing at the nearby 18-holes green, enjoying the fantastic beaches at easy reach, where the mild mediterranean climate allows to practise all water sports as swimming, scuba diving, sailing, windsurfing, or just sunbathing for nearly eight months a year and even more.
The region Sicily too offers many interesting itineraries, like the world famous "Valley of the Temples" in Agrigento, the impressing greek theatres of Taormina, Siracusa and Segesta, the arab mosques in Palermo, the outstanding norman cathedrals of Monreale, Palermo and Cefalù, the splendid baroque churces and buldings of Palermo, |
